Selection Guide
M12 connectors are widely used in industrial automation, sensor wiring, actuator control, low-voltage power, industrial data transmission and compact device interfaces. The M12 format provides a practical balance between compact size, secure mating, field installation convenience and environmental protection. For many OEM engineers, the key question is not simply "Which M12 connector is available?" but "Which M12 connector structure matches my equipment interface, cable, signal type and working environment?"
LLT M12 connector series is built around this selection logic. The product range covers waterproof M12 cable connectors, overmolded M12 cable harnesses, full-metal M12 connectors, shielded M12 connectors, right-angle M12 PCB connectors, panel-mount receptacles and customized cable assemblies. Depending on the application, customers can choose threaded locking, bayonet quick-locking or Push-Lok locking structures. These options help engineers balance standard compatibility, assembly speed, space limitation, anti-vibration performance and long-term signal stability across each M12 industrial connector interface.
For sensor and actuator applications, 3 pin, 4 pin and 5 pin M12 connectors are commonly used for power supply, switching signals, analog signals, IO-Link devices and compact field wiring. For device-side interfaces, 5 pin and 8 pin shielded M12 PCB connectors are suitable for control modules, gateways, sensor hubs and compact industrial electronics where the external connector must transfer signals directly to the PCB. For OEM cable projects, overmolded M12 cable assemblies can improve strain relief, reduce assembly variation and create a stable waterproof cable exit.
A waterproof M12 connector should be evaluated as a complete interface. The final sealing result depends on connector structure, cable OD, O-ring or gasket compression, rear cable sealing, overmolding quality, mating condition, installation torque and panel interface. For dynamic equipment or outdoor machinery, vibration and cable movement can also affect contact stability. LLT therefore focuses on anti-vibration and anti-momentary-disconnect design, helping reduce the risk of signal interruption caused by loose mating, cable swing or equipment vibration.
When choosing an M12 connector, engineers should confirm six points before quotation: pin assignment, current and voltage, signal type, cable specification, locking structure and environmental exposure. A 4 pin M12 connector used for a sensor is not the same engineering problem as a 4 pin M12 connector used for LED power or a control box interface. Similarly, an 8 pin shielded M12 connector for PCB mounting requires more attention to grounding, shielding continuity, soldering layout and housing design than a simple unshielded cable connector.
LLT supports project-based M12 connector customization for OEMs, equipment manufacturers and cable assembly buyers. Customers can provide pinout drawings, mating connector photos, cable OD, wire gauge, cable jacket requirement, shielding requirement, installation space and target IP rating. LLT can then recommend a suitable M12 connector type and help verify whether a threaded, bayonet or Push-Lok locking structure is more appropriate for the application.

Product Types
LLT overmolded M12 cable harnesses are suitable for OEM equipment that needs fixed cable length, stable waterproof sealing, strain relief and repeatable assembly quality. Compared with on-site soldering or screw termination, an overmolded cable assembly reduces wiring variation and creates a cleaner cable exit. It is suitable for sensors, actuators, outdoor monitoring devices, compact control boxes, LED modules, pumps, fans and customized equipment wiring.
Customization options include cable length, wire gauge, cable OD, PVC/PUR/TPU jacket, shielded or unshielded cable, straight or right-angle cable exit, male/female connector direction, wire color, labels, branch harness, matched connector pair and packaging.
Review custom M12 cable harnessLLT full-metal M12 connectors are designed for industrial equipment that requires stronger mechanical protection, better shielding potential and a more rugged connector appearance. The metal housing helps improve structural stability and is suitable for control equipment, automation modules, outdoor devices, industrial sensors, panel interfaces and field wiring applications where plastic-only structures may not provide enough mechanical confidence.
Full-metal M12 options can be selected for threaded locking, field wiring, panel mounting, shielding continuity and applications exposed to vibration, repeated maintenance or harsh industrial environments.
Review waterproof circular connectorsLLT shielded right-angle M12 PCB connectors are designed for device-side interfaces where the connector must be mounted directly onto a PCB board. 5 pin and 8 pin options are available for compact signal, control and data-related interfaces. The right-angle structure helps save internal height and supports compact housing design, while the shielding structure can help improve signal integrity when the equipment requires grounding or EMI control.
Typical applications include sensor hubs, industrial gateways, I/O modules, compact controllers, outdoor communication devices, machine vision equipment, smart agriculture controllers and sealed electronic enclosures.
Review shielded M12 PCB connectorFor small-batch equipment, maintenance work or enclosure interfaces, LLT provides M12 field-wireable and panel-mount connector options. These connectors are suitable when the customer needs flexible on-site wiring, solder termination, front or rear panel installation, or a defined waterproof interface on a sealed control box.
Before selecting a panel-mount M12 connector, LLT recommends confirming panel thickness, mounting hole size, gasket compression, internal soldering space, mating direction and whether the customer needs a male or female external interface.

Pin Guide
The correct M12 pin count depends on the electrical function and equipment interface. A 2 pin or 3 pin M12 connector may be used for simple DC power, switching signals or compact device wiring. A 4 pin M12 connector is one of the most common choices for sensors, actuator wiring and low-voltage control. A 5 pin M12 connector can support additional signal, grounding or control lines. An 8 pin M12 connector is useful for compact multi-core signal, shielded data-related interfaces, device-side PCB connections or customized OEM cable harnesses.
LLT recommends confirming the pinout before quotation. The same 4 pin M12 connector may be used in different ways in a sensor, LED module, pump, control box or outdoor monitoring device. Correct pin mapping helps avoid reverse polarity, signal error, wrong mating direction and unnecessary redesign during sample approval.
| Pin Count | Typical Use Direction | Selection Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 pin | DC power, simple signal | Confirm polarity, current and cable OD |
| 3 pin | Sensor power + signal | Suitable for compact sensing and control |
| 4 pin | Sensor, actuator, LED, control wiring | Most common compact signal interface |
| 5 pin | Sensor + extra signal / ground / control | Useful for IO-Link-style and control interfaces |
| 8 pin | Multi-core signal, shielded data, PCB interface | Confirm shielding, pinout and cable construction |
Compatibility Note
M12 connector selection should not be based on shell size alone. In industrial applications, M12 connectors may be associated with different coding systems, pin counts and signal types. A-style M12 connectors are commonly used for sensors, actuators, low-voltage DC and general automation signals. D-coded and X-coded M12 connectors are typically associated with industrial Ethernet and higher-speed data transmission. L-coded and T-coded M12 connectors are used for compact DC power applications.
For LLT projects, the engineering team reviews the actual pin assignment, mating geometry, shielding, cable construction and installation environment before recommending an M12 connector. This is especially important for machine vision, industrial Ethernet, IO-Link, encoder, gateway and PCB-mounted applications. A connector that looks mechanically similar may not be electrically compatible if the coding, shielding, cable impedance or pin mapping is different.
Note: Do not assume every M12 connector supports Ethernet or IO-Link. Coding, shielding, cable impedance and pin assignment must be confirmed before sample approval.
Waterproof Design
In real equipment, M12 connector reliability is affected by more than the nominal IP rating. Cable movement, vibration, repeated mating, thermal cycling, panel tolerance and installation torque may all influence long-term contact stability. LLT M12 connectors are designed with waterproof sealing and stable mating as a combined engineering target for anti-vibration M12 connector and vibration-resistant M12 connector applications.
For waterproof performance, LLT reviews the cable OD, rear sealing structure, O-ring or gasket compression, overmolding quality and mating condition. For vibration-sensitive applications, the locking structure, contact pressure, cable strain relief and mating depth must be considered together. A connector that is waterproof but mechanically loose may still create unstable signals under vibration. LLT therefore recommends anti-vibration and anti-momentary-disconnect review for sensors, robotic equipment, mobile machinery, outdoor monitoring devices, pumps, fans and control boxes so the M12 connector prevents signal interruption during real use.
Customization
Many M12 connector projects are not solved by buying a loose connector. OEM customers often need a complete cable harness with custom M12 cable length, defined wire gauge, jacket material, pinout, labels, branch structure and matched mating connector. LLT supports customized M12 cable harnesses for sensor wiring, actuator cables, outdoor control modules, compact power interfaces, PCB devices and sealed equipment.
Compared with field wiring, an overmolded M12 cable assembly can improve strain relief, reduce wiring variation and create a more consistent waterproof cable exit. LLT can customize straight or right-angle cable exits, male or female connector direction, PVC/PUR/TPU cable jackets, shielded cable, wire color definition, cable labels, branch harnesses, mating connector sets and packaging according to the customer's equipment design, including M12 connector with PUR cable and M12 connector with PVC cable requirements.
